19 Tips to Embrace Braided Beauty with Confidence

I’ve had locks for eight years, from my high school days right through to my master’s graduation. So, opting for braids was not big deal for me. Despite concerns about hair loss and potential bald spots, I diligently followed most of the guidance I received. Thankfully, it worked out well for me. Here are my tips for anyone considering braids:

Pre-Braid Preparations: Setting the Stage for Stylish Transformation

1. Ensure your hair is strong and thick, as it will undergo a fair amount of pulling and stress while in braids.

2. Consider taking Biotin (Vitamin H) while you have your braids, and possibly for a month afterward. It’s always best to consult your doctor or pharmacist first.

3. Slim braids can be more damaging and time-consuming to create. I recommend opting for medium-sized braids; they’re nearly as stylish and less harmful.

4. Choose a reputable salon. It’s crucial they know what they’re doing. I did them in Nairobi during my trip in Kenia.

5. Do your own research! Since you’ve landed here, it looks like you are on the right path, however I am not a profesional. These tips come from my own experience with my own hair.

During Braided Bliss:

Navigating Style

6. Own your braids, they are a fabulous way to express yourself. Show people some attitude.

7. Don’t worry about the initial shock of your new look. You’ll quickly adapt to your braided coolness. Be open to experimenting with different styles.

8. Have a variety of hair ties on hand; the larger, the better. I found ribbons with metallic wire inside to be quite versatile, allowing me to secure my hair as needed.

9. Plan to wash your hair about once a week. While some recommend once every two weeks, trust your judgment. I washed them with soap, instead of shampoo. I used to wash my locks with soap as well. You can wash & rinse them more easily with soap instead of shampoo.

10. Wrap your braids in a scarf or shower cap at night to protect them and ensure a comfortable sleep.

11. Some experts recommend moisturizing your scalp occasionally. I didn’t, and it was fine, but your experience might differ.

12. I freed two braids on each side of my face to accommodate new growth. These shorter new hair framed my face nicely.

13. If you have shorter hair than your extensions, the ends will start peeking out after a couple of weeks. You can crochet them back in, use hairspray, or simply leave them be — they have their own charm.

14. Don’t keep the braids in for more than two months. Any longer can be harmful to your hair and might not look as good.

15. If your hair is as long as the extensions, seek help from friends or professionals to remove them — it’s a lengthy process. If your hair is shorter, trimming the extensions a centimeter below where your natural hair ends, then just untying the top part, saves a lot of time.

16. When untying, start from the bottom of your head. This way, if you don’t finish in one go, you can style the untied hair into two braids, and it will look just fine, even if you’ve only done about 40%.

Post-Braid Revelations: Recovery and Care

17. Don’t be alarmed by the hair loss. It’s normal to lose up to 100 hairs a day. With hair bound in braids for about two months, shedding is expected once they’re removed. Pay attention to how your scalp and hair feel, rather than the amount of hair you think you lose.

18. In addition to tip number 2, incorporating hair masks, serums, and massages can expedite the recovery process, nurturing your hair back to health more quickly.

19. Don’t redo them right away, give your hair at least three months to recover.

In summary, wearing braids is a unique experience that blends style and a bit of hair care adventure. While it does come with its set of challenges, the journey can be incredibly interesting. Remember, the key is to listen to your hair, be patient with the process, and most importantly, embrace the change with enthusiasm and confidence. Your braids are more than just a hairstyle; they’re a reflection of your unique journey. So wear them proudly, care for them and enjoy every moment of it. After all, it’s not just about the hairstyle, but the stories and experiences that come with it.

Enjoy the new look!
