Washing the Running Shoes: a Practical Guide

Washing the running shoes has always been a task that seemed like an unavoidable chore to me. For a long time, I didn’t have the courage to put my favorite shoes in the washing machine. Especially when it came to a pair that cost a $200, the idea seemed unacceptable to me. I bought these sneakers during a trip to Colombia in February 2023. Since I have a wide foot, I find it difficult to buy online. The trip to Colombia was a good opportunity to find what I was looking for. This way I would be be ready for the 2023 Tirana Marathon, my first full marathon.

Online research directed me to the Adidas Adizero Boston 11, which I found durable and comfortable. In addition, they had a more reasonable price compared to the professional versions. They were perfect for long runs, with a lifespan of around 3000 km. They would be more than enough as far as I was concerned. That year, for example, I think I ran about 550 kilometers. While visiting Medellin, I found them in green and black. Fortunately, they fit me very well. After nearly six months, it was time to wash them.

Lacking time, I decided to try the washing machine. It was time to face my fears and put my favorite running shoes through a wash cycle. Below I’m sharing a practical guide to help you wash your running shoes.

Practical Guide to Wash Running Shoes

1. Preparation:

 – Start by removing the laces and inner soles of the shoes. These parts often retain dust and dirt from use.

 – Place the insoles and laces in a container of warm water and detergent, letting them soak while the sneakers are in the washing machine.

2. Placing in the Washing Machine:

 – Put the shoes in a cloth bag with holes or an old pillow case to avoid damage during washing.

 – Add some old towels to the washing machine to provide better cushioning and soften the strong movements during washing.

 – Use a gentle wash cycle, ideal for cotton clothes, with a maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. The cycle time I choose is 59 minutes.

3. After Washing:

 – After the cycle is finished, remove the running shoes from the washing machine and hang them outside to dry. Do not use the dryer, as the heat can damage it.

 – In the meantime, rinse the insoles and laces well with running water and take them out to dry as well.

4. Detailed Cleaning:

 – If they still have stains or dirt in specific areas, use an old toothbrush and some soap to clean the problem areas. My good ones for example still had dirt on the upper part under the laces and on the outsole. After you clean them, rinse with clean water and let dry.

5. Conclusion:

 – It took them less than 24 hours to dry completely on a hot summer day. After I put on the laces and soles the sneakers were ready to use again. They looked like brand new.
